Postcard from Kenya: Serian, Day 2

Postcard from Kenya: Serian, Day 2

An early morning hike replaced the normal game drive, today.  We set out with our friendly Maasai “warriors”, Steve and James, carrying spears and machetes to protect us from any potential predators.  The closest we came to danger were a few lion tracks, all manner of scat, and a sick hippo.  Still it was a beautiful walk.  We didn’t quite make it all the way up to the top of the escarpment…I’m pretty sure that was my fault, as I couldn’t even attempt to keep up with my (much) younger, fitter cohort and we were on a schedule.

Still, it was a nice walk, especially the downhill part, and the views back down to the river and the plains beyond were worth the trek.  On the way back, our guides showed us their awesome treehouse, where lucky guests can choose to spend a few hours or stay overnight, star-gazing to the melody of the hippos.

Serian had another surprise for us later that day.  We were driven to their “secret” hideaway, Chemi Chemi,  where selected guests can spend a magical night in this 2-story tented aerie, high above the Mara River, complete with His/Hers rope beds, suspended from the second story bedroom.  Yes, there’s also a “normal” bed, indoor bathroom, and outdoor shower, plus 180-degree views of the river, the animals, and the awe-inspiring Mara sunrises and sunsets.  Perfect for honeymooners or anyone, really.  So special, it can’t even be booked.  You have to be there!
